Baltimore County Police released details from today's PD Involved Shooting.
Baltimore County Police have released the following information concerning today's Bank Robbery and subsequent Police Involved Shooting in the Pikesville area.
"A suspect who had just participated in a Pikesville bank robbery was fatally shot by police this afternoon as he and a second suspect fled the scene in a car.Both suspects are male. The suspect who was fatally shot was driving the car.
The second suspect -- believed by police to be the "Aviator" serial bank robber wanted by the FBI -- suffered non-life threatening injuries; charges against him are pending.The robbery occurred at 1:08 p.m. at the Wells Fargo bank in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road in Pikesville.
Information that the suspects had fled the scene in a vehicle was transmitted immediately to law enforcement. Officers shut down traffic in the area of Old Court and Falls roads in order to impede the suspects' flight along a likely escape route.The investigation by the Homicide Unit is in its preliminary stages. This preliminary investigation indicates that officers were on foot on Old Court Road along the line of stopped traffic when a Ford Taurus traveling east on Old Court pulled out of the line of stopped traffic, crossed the center line and drove toward one of the officers.
At about 1:20 p.m., as the vehicle was coming toward the officer, the officer fired into the front windshield of the car, striking the driver.The car went through the intersection with Falls Road, continuing onto Ruxton Road and striking a civilian vehicle. This vehicle in turn struck a second civilian vehicle. No serious injuries are reported to the people in these vehicles.The bank robbery was committed by passing a note, a common tactic among bank robbers. Police recovered money and bank property from the Taurus. Police have not recovered a weapon from the suspects or the suspect vehicle.An administrative review is conducted for all police-involved shootings. The officer who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative status, a standard procedure.
BCoPD intends to release his last name about 48 hours after the shooting, in accordance with its agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #4.In addition to the Homicide investigation and the administrative review, the Baltimore County Firearms Discharge Review Board examines every shot fired by police for compliance with agency policy.
There is body camera footage from a responding officer at this scene. This footage does not capture the shooting itself. The officer who fired his weapon was not equipped with a camera; BCoPD's body camera program launched in July, and to date about 100 of the more than 1,400 officers who eventually will wear them have been assigned cameras."
